How to Join Student Government:

Thank you for taking interest in joining the Student Government of Ferris State University. As one of the oldest organizations on the campus of Ferris State University, Student Government was founded to represent the student body as a whole and to address concerns of the student body. We are focused on improving student life and the campus of Ferris State University for the betterment every student.

To qualify for membership, you must:

1) Must be currently enrolled as a student within Ferris State University

2) Have a semester GPA of no less than 2.25 and a cumulative GPA of no less than 2.5 (Incoming freshmen need to have a high school cumulative GPA of no less than 2.75).

3) Attend 3 meetings

4) Complete the application and submit it to the Director of Internal Assessment

Duties Include:

1) Attendance of all student government meetings, which are Tuesdays at 5 p.m.

2) Completion of two office hours a week

3) Participate in both an internal and external committee

4) Express Ferris Pride!!!

Types of Membership Include:

College Senator:

Represent your academic college for the student government. Must meet with dean on a regular basis to discuss issues with college. College Senators need to check College Senators on the application, along with get a signature from a faculty member within their respective college. College Senators also need to get 50 signatures (sheet included) from students within their college on the membership application.

Registered Student Organization Reprentative:

 

Represent your RSO for the student government. Must meet with advisor & RSO President on a regular basis. RSO Representatives need to check RSO Representatives on the application, along with writing in the RSO you wish to represent located under the check box. RSO Representatives need to also get the signature of their RSO President on the application and get signatures from all active members (or 50 if more than 50 people are active).

Finance Division Member

 

Membership on the Finance Division needs to seek prior approval from the Director of Finance (information available on this website) to ensure empty seats are available. Members seek to distribute funds from the Student Activity Fund to all campus RSO’s that apply. People looking for a seat on the Finance Division do not need to acquire any signatures on the included signature sheet.

Student Government Presidency:

 

This option is only available to current student government members who have been members for at least 2 semesters following the next presidential term. Potential Presidents for the Student Government of Ferris State University need to get 200 signatures (print the signature section on the application four times) from people representing a span of at least 5 different academic colleges. Potential presidential candidates will engage in a formal debate, or in the event of only one member running, shall give a formal speech declaring their intentions.

If you have any questions regarding membership or the application process feel free to contact us. Our office is open often during weekday afternoons. The schedule of our hours is available online as well as posted outside our office, located in the Rankin Center, Room 121 (next to the Huntington ATM, Seattle’s Best and the entrance to Westview Dining). Applications do not need to be submitted until one is ready to be admitted, but seeing how signatures are needed we advise you to start as soon as possible.
